Essential Gear Insurance Tips for Touring Musicians

Hitting the road and sharing your music with the world can be a dream come true for any musician. Isn't it? But between the long drives, unfamiliar venues, and the hustle and bustle of live shows, your precious gear faces a range of risks.

Losing or damaging your instruments and equipment can be a devastating blow, both financially and creatively. Therefore, it is a good idea to get equipped with a comprehensive music gear insurance plan. It would help you weave a safety net to ensure you are stage-ready even in difficult scenarios or standing in the face of unforeseen knocks.

Here is a comprehensive checklist to equip touring musicians with crucial information to navigate the complexities of musical instrument insurance:

1. Gear Inventory and Valuation:

The foundation of your insurance journey lies in having a detailed inventory of your musical equipment. It includes:

•    List every instrument, piece of equipment, and accessory.
•    Include brand, model, serial number, and year of purchase.
•    Gather receipts or proof of purchase for accurate valuation.

The next step is to determine the current value of each item. Consider using online marketplaces, retailer websites, or professional appraisals to get accurate estimations. Remember, underestimating your gear's value can lead to insufficient coverage in case of a claim.

2. Explore Insurance Options:

Specialized insurance offers dedicated coverage. While homeowner's or renter's insurance might offer basic coverage for personal belongings, it often excludes high-value items like instruments and equipment, or limits coverage to specific locations (e.g., your home).

Here are three common types of instrument-specific insurance to consider:

•    Standalone insurance: This offers the most comprehensive coverage, catering to the specific needs of musicians. It typically covers theft, accidental damage, and various perils like fire, flood, and vandalism, both on and off the stage.
•    Inland marine insurance: This covers your equipment while in transit, offering protection during travel between tour dates.
•    Floater policy: This is an add-on to your existing homeowner's or renter's insurance that can provide increased coverage for specific valuable items like your musical gear.

3. Understand Coverage Levels and Exclusions:

Before finalizing your policy, carefully review the coverage details:

•    Coverage limit: It defines the maximum amount the insurer will pay for a lost or damaged item.
•    Deductible: This is the amount you'll need to pay out of pocket before the insurance kicks in.
•    Excluded perils: Some policies might exclude specific risks like wear and tear, gradual deterioration, or intentional damage.
•    Location coverage: Ensure your chosen plan covers your gear while traveling, during gigs, and while stored in different locations.

4. Secure Additional Coverage When Needed:

Depending on your specific needs, consider adding optional coverages to your policy:

•    Rented equipment:
If you frequently rent equipment for specific gigs, ensure your policy covers it in case of damage or loss.
•    Personal liability: This protects you if your equipment causes damage to someone else's property or injures someone during a performance.
•    Loss of income: Some policies offer coverage for lost income due to cancellations or delays caused by events like equipment theft or damage.

5. Choosing the Right Insurance Provider:

Compare quotes from multiple insurers specializing in music gear insurance. Consider factors like:

•    Reputation and customer reviews: Research the company's track record and how they handle claims.
•    Coverage options and flexibility: Choose a policy that offers the specific coverage you need at a competitive price point.
•    Customer service: Opt for a company known for its responsiveness and ease of communication in case of a claim.

By following this "Stage Ready" checklist, touring musicians can navigate the world of musical instrument insurance with confidence. Remember, protecting your valuable equipment is an investment that ensures you can continue to share your music with the world - worry-free. So, embrace financial stability and peace of mind, and get yourself the assurance of a dedicated insurance plan for your gear. This small piece of paper can save you a great deal.

Do You Need Travel Insurance for Saxophone Instruments?

If you own a saxophone, regardless of what your professional standing may be - an amateur, a student with intermediate skill, or a high-end musician, you should be particular about safeguarding your instrument and investment.

Some of the best ways to do that are -

●    First of all, by installing a decent home security system in your home or recording studio
●    And, secondly, by purchasing a suitable Saxophone Insurance plan

Home or renter insurance plan

When deciding on the right insurance policy for your musical instruments and related accessories, the best stand, to begin with, is your home or renter insurance. Charity begins at home, you know. Jokes apart, your home insurance or renter protection policy is more likely to cover your gears if something unwanted happens to them inside your home.

Make sure to check with your insurance service provider if there exists a designated limit for each item. Do you understand what it means? With your home insurance plan, your saxophone might not be fully protected.

Another crucial thing to be aware of here is your homeowners' insurance policy is applicable only when the damage or loss is caused by one of the many perils, such as vandalism or fire. Issues as a result of earthquakes and floods are least likely to be covered.

Plus, you get coverage for your main musical instrument only. Home or renter insurance does not cover accessories. However, when it comes to musical instrument insurance plans, they offer all-risk cover. And, they also include your accessories.

Add-on or rider on home insurance

You can also schedule your musical gear. It means that you can purchase an add-on for your saxophone on your home or renter insurance plan. Although it may increase the extent of coverage a little, the protection will still not be all-encompassing.

Travel insurance plan

If you are worried about any kind of damage or loss during travel or transportation, you can choose another option, i.e., travel insurance. Travel insurance plans that come with baggage loss benefits are likely to pay for a lost, misplaced, or damaged musical instrument.

The reason - if you have bought a travel insurance plan that offers baggage loss benefits, all your bags, along with your instruments are likely to be covered. However, then it will depend on the type and price point of your musical instrument.

Do not forget to check the amount of coverage given on your coverage confirmation document. Remember, it is the maximum sum insured that your insurance company will pay you for a covered loss.

Dedicated musical instrument coverage

If your saxophone is high-end or if you want complete peace of mind, considering a standalone Saxophone Insurance plan is the best thing to do. Most musical instruments and accessories are likely to travel with you both long and short distances and domestically and internationally. It is especially for you if you are a touring artist. In such cases, having a comprehensive musical instrument insurance plan is vital.

Moreover, if you see the reports, you will find that most frequently, the losses or damages to musical gears are caused due to breakage. Although the instances of water damage, fire, etc., are not so frequent, they can end up being very severe and heavy on your wallet. Therefore, being prepared in advance is always a wise thing. Precaution is better than cure, after all.

Some tips to protect your saxophone while traveling

●    If you are traveling via air, make sure to keep your woodwind into the cabin. In case you are carrying large musical instruments like a cello, you may book an extra seat next to you.

●    Make sure not to leave your musical gear unattended, whether it is your car, a bus, a train, or any other vehicle or place.

●    Do not forget to take pictures of your saxophone before and after your journey. It will help you if you have filed a claim settlement case.

●    If your musical instrument is lost or damaged during transit, make sure to inform your airline and insurance provider within 24 hours of the accident.

Now that you have a fairly clear idea about the insurance options you have, you are wise enough to understand if or not you need travel insurance for your saxophone or get a comprehensive musical instrument insurance plan.

How to Protect Your Instruments from the Heat

Have you ever walked by an old wooden ship? If you have, you've probably noticed the planks can become quite crooked. This is, in part, because significant temperature changes can cause wood to shrink and expand. The same processes can damage the delicate structure of wooden musical instruments.

Temperatures above 100 degrees will cause the glue in string instruments to degrade. While it's unlikely to melt the glue completely, it's just enough for the tension in the strings to start damaging the neck. Brass instruments and pianos are not resistant to heat either. Metal can expand and shrink, and piano keys become "sluggish" if you expose them to extreme temperatures.

So what can you do to protect your instruments? In this article, we cover everything you should know about protecting your instruments from the heat.

Basic Musical Instrument Protection

First of all, don't leave your instruments in the car. It seems obvious, but your car is just about the last place you should ever leave an instrument. On a hot day, when the outside temperature rises anywhere near 80 degrees, the temperature inside your car quickly rises above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Direct sunlight is another major problem, especially with string instruments like guitars. Extended exposure to the direct sun could damage the lacquer and loosen the strings, making them fall out of tune and weaken over time.

Guitar finishing is also susceptible to rapid temperature shifts. Of course, the same also applies to any other wooden musical instrument. A good basic rule of thumb is to keep your instruments in the same sort of conditions you would like to be in yourself - comfortable room temperature, and around 50% humidity.

Storage Temperatures for Various Instruments

A vital part of instrument care is knowing proper storage methods and techniques. Regardless of what instrument you play, it is crucial to pay attention to both temperature and humidity at all times to help carefully preserve and protect your investment.

Be sure to store the instrument in its case whenever it's not in use. We recommend a wooden shelf in a temperature-controlled room for optimal storage. Also, be sure to only use quality hard-cases. Soft cases heat up faster and, more importantly, allow excessive transfer of heat and humidity to the instrument.

The proper room temperature and humidity varies from instrument to instrument. For example, guitars are optimally stored at between 72 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit, with humidity levels between 45% and 55%.

Humidity below 40% will cause the wood to shrink, but anything above 55% may cause expansion or warping. A similar range applies to many other instruments, but it's crucial to research what your specific instrument needs. There is no such thing as a heatproof musical instrument, and different families of instruments react differently to various humidity levels.

Temperature and Moisture Control

It's impossible to appropriately protect against humidity when you don't know the current moisture level in your home. Thankfully, a humidity monitor is the easiest way to get a dynamic, accurate measurement. Prices range widely, but even moderately priced devices have a margin of error of only around +1/-1%.

Depending on whether you are living in an arid or humid area, you may need to consider a humidifier or a dehumidifier, respectively. Some advocate for cheaper solutions, such as humidifying a room by drying clothes there or leaving the bathroom door open while showering, but these methods should be avoided because these methods are a lot less effective and are not worth the risk.

Controlling general room temperature and keeping it in the desired range tends to be a bit easier. Generally, understanding the ideal range and setting the thermostat to match will keep the temperature where it needs to be. Depending on your climate, the time of year, and the insulation of your storage area, you may need to consider additional preventative measures.

Get Full Protection

Ensuring your musical instruments are appropriately stored and maintained will help significantly extend their longevity, but there is more you can do to preserve them. Ensure you have everything you need to restore your musical instruments should the unexpected occur. Anyone can befall a massive mistake, or simply be the victim of terrible luck. Top Maintenance Tips for Piccolo

What is that one difficulty you find when you own a piccolo? The maintenance can be quite a daunting affair in case of the instrument. You will see that though the sound is perfect, there are times when the tuning does not seem so good, and you ought to manage the instrument, and make it work properly. The care for piccolo should not be a one-time affair; instead, make sure you invest some time and energy into maintaining and servicing the piccolo so that it enjoys a long life.

The question remains, how to service the piccolo while at home, without any professional's interference. Here are a few tips that should help you.
  • The first part of the process is assembling the instrument. You ought to be careful about the whole process, and what goes where. When assembling the instrument, there are a few things that you ought to take into account. Here we will detail the same for you.
    • You will first need to be sure that the tenon cork is smooth and lubricate. You ought to use the cork grease for the purpose. The reason being this lubrication will ensure the smooth and easy fit of the cork in the instrument
    • Next on, you ought to hold the wood above the assembly mechanism and the headjoint from below the embouchure hole in order to piece them together. Twist the two in order to make the fix properly. Make sure you don't insert the finger while putting the two together
    • Make sure you don't apply too much pressure while joining the two ends. If you are unable to squeeze them together, then connect with a professional
  • The next part of the process involves cleaning the Piccolo. You will need to clean and swab the insides of the Piccolo clean. Here are our favorite techniques to help you with that
    • Use a silk oboe swab connected with a string, and use the weight to remove the condensation from within the instrument. You should ideally perform the swabbing after every use of the instrument. This way you will increase the life of the instrument, and reduce the maintenance needs exhibited by the instrument
    • Make sure you keep the Piccolo protected from the temperature extremes in your surrounding environment. This could affect, specifically if you move from a warm building into a cold temperature. It can crack the wood of the instrument. You should ideally insulate the instrument within a case so that it remains protected.
    • The headjoint should be ideally warmed up before it is blown into the embouchure hole. This way, you can avoid the cracking of the headjoint or other parts of the instrument. The headjoint has a thinner piece of wood, and is more prone to the cracks
    • The fingerprints on the instrument can be removed with the help of a cotton cloth that is dampened in water. You should ideally not use cloth that are infused with the cleaning chemical. It is not recommended to use silver polish on the instrument to complete the cleaning. When not in use, keep the instrument within the case, safe and protected. Make sure you clean, and oil both the wood and mechanism of the instrument at regular intervals. The headjoint should be oiled more frequently, at least 3 to 4 times a year.
It is understandable if you can't maintain the instrument thoroughly off your own. You ought to invest in a good Piccolo insurance in that case. It will help you manage regular servicing as well as maintenance of the instrument on a regular basis.

A Complete Guide to Buying Fiddle Insurance Online

The fiddle, a more colloquial term used for violin, is often one of the grandest instruments you would be purchasing. It is expensive, especially if you are planning a vintage one. The bow and the strings have an additional cost and maintenance attached to it. At this point, you ought to plan on investing in fiddle insurance that can support your cause. The main question, however, is what kind of insurance you should buy, and how to look for the ideal insurance solution? Here we will take you through the insurance buying process.
  • The choice, whether you want to opt for online shopping or offline purchase is made early on. This is related to convenience and how much you trust the online world when buying something as important as an instrument. There are obvious pros and cons attached to every choice made by you, and that's precisely why you need to think through this point before moving on.
  • Once you have decided whether you want to go online or offline with the purchase, the next step is to choose the sellers. There are limited choices offline; just the shops in your location. However, when it comes to choosing a seller online, there is no geographical limit. If someone chooses to ship the instrument to your location, you can choose them as your seller. The criteria are they should be able to ship the goods, they should be reliable and they should sell the instrument that you have been planning to buy.
  • It is important to have a budget in mind when you go to the store to buy the fiddle. Of course, research into the available instrument sellers and how much they sell the instrument for can always help you with setting the budget. However, if you don't have an idea into the actual budget, you can always ask for help from people who have bought it or from the instructor who teaches you how to play the instrument. They will be able to guide you through the actual price for a second hand as well as a new fiddle. They would also tell you what is the best choice for you.
  • Once you have followed all these steps, it is time to check on the seller. Are they as good as they claim to be? If you are looking to purchase online, you should check for the reviews and ratings posted for the seller by the various buyers. If not, then you might want to go for references. There would be many people who have bought from the seller you are planning to buy from. Check with them how the customer service is and other details.
  • The insurance is an important deal! Don't forget to buy it along with the instrument. The fiddle insurance should be a well-thought purchase with a well-defined scope and requirement list. Make sure you buy the insurance from a trustworthy party for better customer service and support for your instrument.

When you show them respect, you get some back too. They don’t teach just what they ought to, they teach you something that remains untold about you. They identify your special skills, help you recognize them, and then help you learn it in detail. Sometimes, vocals is not someone’s strong suit. This is where the instructor will help the person identify what really works for them, and then teaches it accordingly. They empathize with the students and don’t let them feel they cannot do it.

#2 Make students comfortable
There are teachers or schools that make the students happy and comfortable. however, the happiness is short-lived if the student cannot achieve what they have set out to. The instructor that brings the students out of their comfort zone, and makes them aware of what they can do is the one the students can learn maximum from. The instructor will not simply teach you an overview into music; they will actually help you understand the nuances of music, and make you stretch out yourself before you wrap your head around the sound.

#3 Improve the learning of the students
There is a way to guide students; a way in which they will be able to get maximum learning with minimal guidance. This is an efficient way to teach a student. An instructor who understands this will be able to give optimal lessons to the students and make sure they have learnt well. They will make their guides effective and plan their lessons in order to make sure the student learns everything they want them to

#4 Go with the basics
The basics are often ignored in many cases. But, if your music instructor has a love for basics, don’t leave them. They will teach you everything you want to know about music, and prepare you from the base. Once you know the basics, there is nothing that will stop you from being at the top

If you have these qualities, then you simply need to invest in a solid insurance. This will help you protect your music and safeguard your lessons.

Are your students always interested in the instrument or, do they show some disinterest at some point in time. As an instructor, your job is not just difficult but also quite time-consuming. You are not only supposed to make the lessons interesting but, you need to ensure that your teaching style matches the needs expressed by the students. Every class you take requires a lot of strategizing from your end. You need to keep up with the learning achievements of your students and need to encourage them to go further with every lesson.

Again, not every student learns the same way, and you need to make sure your lessons are capable enough of indulging in the needs of the learner. Here are a few things that you need to know as the guitar instructor

Pointers for the guitar instructor

#1: Plan your lessons
Just as any other teacher, it is important for you as the music instructor to plan a curriculum for the term.
  • Map the different lessons you are planning to cover through the year. You should assign a domain to the different topics you are planning to cover.
  • Theory could be a part of the curriculum, and you should plan the timeline as well for theory. You should define the domain you want to teach the beginners and the domain you are planning for the slightly higher classes.
  • Next set the goals for the domain. How far and advanced do you want your students to be in the domain you have mapped out? This setting goal method can help you with planning your lessons effectively.
  • Instead of teaching from scratch, you can have music lessons that make them listen to the different types of music available. Get them to listen to the guitar music played by the different artists
  • The electric guitar is sure to sound different from the acoustic one, and you need to help them understand the differences between the two sounds. You can even get them to watch videos of the two different sets of music being played for better understanding
  • Detail out your lessons on the history of music. Take them on visits to places known for the music or you can even get the school to plan a visit to the local live music theatres. The more they hear and play, the better they will learn.
  • You cannot give your complete attention and know what type of student you have in your class when you are attending to them only once a week. Make sure the school gives more importance to music, and pitch in timings that will help you know the student better and give them lessons that will help them grow. The lessons should be planned for more than once a week. As the lessons act to be a stress buster, you might want to have them at least twice or thrice a week.
While all this will help you keep up with the music lessons, you need to invest in guitar insurance if you want to safeguard your instrument and keep your classes going despite all odds.
